Summary of English edition

TATUNG UNION
The union was named "Tatung Steel Machinery Co., Ltd Union (Taipei)" (aka. Tatung Union) since its establishment on 1st May, 1959. Then, it renamed itself to "Tatung Co., Ltd Union (Taipei)” with the change in the name of the company in 1968. After the implementation of new Labor Union Act in 2011, it was renamed again to “Tatung (Group) Co., Ltd Union”.

Tatung Union started with 640 members and the range of coverage includes Tatung Company and its subsidiary. In the beginning, the union was just set up by the company in line with government policies. Members of the union did not fully understand the nature and missions of the union. However, after the lift of Martial Law, the union keeps improving the operation of union affairs and has established institutions in personnel, finance, organization and training, services, and so on to make the union sound by the enthusiastic efforts and promotion of board members, supervisors, staff and the support of members since 1989. The number of members was more than 10,000 at its maximum, but it declined afterwards to about 3,000 for the time being due to the downsizing of the company and other factors.

With regard to the details how the union strived towards autonomous operation, Taiwan Labour Front published a book “Fighting for Dignity: A Struggle of Tatung Union” (book cover on the upper-left corner) and a special issue "Journey from Nominal to Practical Union: 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Tatung Union".
